Spring Series, 2014

Caravaggio Alabama TEXT

Does the Old Testament really matter if we have the New Testament?  YES!!!  Our series this Spring is "Seeing Jesus in the Old Testament: What is the Bible about?"  We will be looking at the major story of scripture from Genesis to Revelation and how that story is about a God who is the Great Rescuer of his people.  First RUF is Wednesday, Jan. 15 in Shelby, rm. 1004.

Understanding the Bible.

Jan. 15            1.  What is the Bible about? (Jesus)   Luke 24:27, 44-45

Jan. 22            2.  What’s the most important page of the Bible? (resurrection)  1 Cor. 15:12-20

Jan. 29            3.  Where do I start in the OT, pt. 1?  (A Pattern for Redemption: God frees us first.) Exo. 14.  God is always freeing us FROM something, TO something.

Feb. 5            4.  Where do I start in the OT, pt. 2? (A Pattern for Redemption: What does God want from me?) What is he freeing me to?  Exo. 19:4-6

Feb. 12            5.  Who is God?  Who are you?  Who am I? (Creation account) Gen. 1-2

Feb. 19            6.  What happened that I needed saving/freeing?  (Fall) Gen. 3

Feb. 26            7.  Where is Jesus in Gen. 3:16?  (The first gospel)  The OT’s anticipation of Jesus begins here.

Mar. 5            8.  Guest (Richard Vise)

Understanding Jesus from the OT.

Mar. 12            9.  Noah – We need more than a life boat.  Why God didn’t just start over. True atonement.   How/Why Jesus was “drowned” for us.  (Common Grace, providential care for humans by God.  Humans inability to care for others.)  Gen. 6:18-21; 8:21-22

Mar. 19            10.  Abraham – We need better obedience and a better sacrifice. (When God calls us, he asks for everything. However, sacrificing Isaac wouldn’t have fixed anything for us. God can ask us for everything because he gives everything.) Gen. 22: 1-19

Apr. 2            11.  Moses – We need a better representative, one who can make intercession for us and God.  IOW, we need a better agent.  Exo. 33:12-23; Heb.

Apr. 9            12.  David – We need an even better representative and king.  (What Moses couldn’t do, surely David can!  Nope.  David points to our need for a representative/king who will rule righteously.  David falls short) 1 Sam. 17

Apr. 16            13.  Israel – We need a true Israel.  A better priest who doesn’t rob God.  “He is coming.”  Mal. 3:1-4

“The gospel is not something partial or piecemeal: it takes in the whole life, the whole of history, the whole world.  It tells us about the creation and the final judgment and everything in between.  It is a complete, whole view of life, and many are unhappy in the Christian life because they have never realized that this way of life caters for the whole of man’s life and covers every eventuality in his experience.  There is no aspect of life but that the gospel has something to say about it.  The whole of life must come under its influence because it is all-inclusive; the gospel is meant to control and govern everything in our lives.”

               -D. Martyn Lloyd-Jones, Spiritual Depression

Gospel Life (aka, Salt) is a 22 lesson study targeted for Sophomores that covers topics in theology and the Christian faith.  Broken up into two parts, 'What God Has Done In Christ: What's going on?' and 'How We Experience The Gospel: How do I get involved?,' we will look together at the story of scripture and God's mission to redeem all things.  This is a great place for those looking to grow in their understanding and knowledge of the faith as well as enter into good discussion and question asking.
